Artist statement

For me painting is an escape from the chaotic world we live in, into a world of wonder and magic, where everything is possible. This is an introspective process, where the reflective journey itself is the goal, not the final artwork. As such my works always deals with the portrayal of human emotions: love, passion, happiness, peace, grief, alienation and loneliness.

What inspires me to paint is often the theatre or modern dance, because the performing arts have an ability to display human feelings in an unadulterated form. It is these deep emotions that I am searching for in my paintings as a sort of catharsis. While I paint I form stories in my mind which accompany the painting, changing every time I sit before the easel.

My work is largely unpremeditated; it is a creative process that requires time and patience, always searching for harmony in colours and composition. It is a process of destruction and rebuilding until I find the right expression in continual dialogue with the painting. Oil painting is the medium most suited for this process allowing to build up new layers and reconstruct the painting almost indefinitely. At the same time, Oils dry slowly; permitting more freedom in mixing the colours directly on the canvas, and hence keep the painting alive and unrestricted for longer.
